Getting around Kansas City
Kansas City built an entirely new transit system for the World Cup called ConnectKC26. If you are flying in from out of town, this is how you will get around.
ConnectKC26: three services
Airport Direct runs buses every 15 minutes from MCI Airport to downtown Kansas City. Skip the rental car line.
Region Direct connects 15 locations across the metro that did not have direct bus links before. Routes run every 20 minutes (30 minutes for the Lawrence route). This is how you get between neighborhoods without a car.
Stadium Direct is match day only. Takes ticketholders from four pickup points and the Fan Festival directly to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. No stops, no parking hassle.
Important: Personal vehicle parking at Arrowhead Stadium will be heavily restricted on match days. Most lots will be used for FIFA operations. Plan to use Stadium Direct or arrive very early.
Other transit options
- KC Streetcar provides free rides through downtown. Runs more frequently during the Fan Festival.
- Johnson County Transit offers free buses connecting Overland Park and Lenexa to MCI Airport (March through November 2026).
- Rideshare: Uber and Lyft operate throughout the metro, but expect surge pricing on match days.
Where to stay
This is where most visitors get tripped up. The short version: downtown is fun but expensive, and short-term rental rules are complicated. The Northland and Liberty offer better value with clear regulations.

Option 1: The Northland (12 to 20 min to stadium)
Best for: media crews, operations staff, families, and anyone who wants space and value.
The Northland is north of the Missouri River, with easy highway access to both the stadium and downtown. Properties have driveway parking, full kitchens, and in-unit laundry.
- 6 properties, 2 to 4 bedrooms each
- $100 to $250/night
- All Superhost-rated on Airbnb
- 15 to 20 min to Fan Festival, 12 to 20 min to Arrowhead

Option 2: Historic Liberty (22 min to stadium)
Best for: fans in town for specific matches, groups, and budget-conscious travelers.
Liberty is its own city with clear rental regulations. Short-term stays of any length are explicitly allowed, no special permits needed.
- 2 side-by-side duplexes on Spring Avenue
- 3 bedrooms each, sleeps 6 per unit
- Book both for groups up to 12
- Walkable historic downtown with restaurants and shops
Option 3: Downtown Kansas City
Best for: visitors with big budgets who prioritize nightlife and Fan Festival access.
Hotels run $300 to $800+ per night. If nightlife and the Fan Festival are your priorities, downtown is where you want to be.
